The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), the independent regulator of electric and other utilities in Alberta, conducted a public hearing for the Fort McMurray West 500-kV Transmission Project from October 12 to November 10, 2016. The AUC anticipates making their final decision on the project and approval of a route by early February 2017.
As part of the hearing, the AUC heard from 11 different intervenor groups, including landowners, Aboriginal groups, industry, and one consumer advocate group in an open and transparent forum. While Alberta PowerLine proposed a preferred route and several alternate route options, it is the AUC’s authority to select and approve the route for Alberta PowerLine to construct that is in the public interest.
Alberta PowerLine will begin construction on Crown land as soon as possible following the AUC’s decision and receipt of all other necessary approvals. Construction on private land is anticipated to begin in late 2017. The transmission line is scheduled to be operational by June 2019.
Throughout the construction period, Alberta PowerLine will continue to provide regular project updates to landholders along the approved route. If you have questions, please contact us.
Alberta PowerLine is a partnership between ATCO and Quanta Services. Alberta PowerLine is 80 per cent owned by Canadian Utilities Limited (an ATCO company) and 20 per cent owned by Quanta Services.
On December 18, 2014, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) awarded Alberta PowerLine the contract to design, build, own and operate the Fort McMurray West 500-kV Transmission Project. This is the first project awarded under the AESO's recently instituted Competitive Process.
The project consists of approximately 500 km of 500-kV transmission line and associated facilities from Wabamun (west of Edmonton) to the Fort McMurray area. The project is identified in the AESO’s Long Term Transmission System Plan to help meet increased electricity demand in the Fort McMurray area and will allow more power to flow into and out of the Fort McMurray area by increasing the capacity of the electrical system.
After extensive consultation with landowners, Aboriginal Communities and interested parties, Alberta PowerLine submitted its facilities application for the Fort McMurray West 500-kV Transmission Project to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) on December 1, 2015.
